How hard is it to get an Amex?

Out of curiosity, how hard is it to get an AMEX card?

Also is there no chance if you have an income of less than 20k?

Do you mean an actual Amex branded Amex or any card with the Amex logo? I've had a lloyds amex card since I was about 19, so not difficult.

I got the green charge card with approx 23 months of credit history. Earn over 20k so not sure what the deal is if you earn under. I'm also carrying a balance (at 0% right enough) on one of my cards, and that didn't seem to phase them at all.

The word is that the green and gold charge cards are easy ish to get, platinum and the credit cards not so "easy" to get.
    Oh, you wee bazza!

No, I was and am still a student. I was pre approved for it though having had a current account with them for a few years.

I would assume that Amex wouldn't accept anyone who didn't meet their criteria, and as such the income related one. However I do believe theirs is household related unless I'm remembering it wrong (although it does ask for your personal income and then anyone else's separately).

An Amex card is probably unlikely to be achieved until you hit the income requirement. I was just over it when I applied, but if I applied now (left one of my jobs) I wouldn't get it as I would be under.

Not too sure how much credit history length matters with them, as I got instant approval for the Platinum Everyday Cashback Credit Card after just over a years worth of credit history.

Ok well it looks like I'l have to wait till I'm in full time work
  • Im 21 and earn around £12,000k annually and I have a Platinum Cashback and a Gold charge card, so I'm guessing not hard - that or I was lucky.
  • I also got the green chargecard whilst a student (many years ago). I ended up with a platinum one (at the time when it was their top card). I was probably putting through 2 or 3K a month at the time, but they wouldn't have known my income.

Although Amex like to push the image that carrying one of their cards is some kind of privilege and says something about your status, this is really just poppycock. I'm guessing their criteria is no different from a standard, decent credit card. Perhaps the willingness to sign up for something involving a fee together with the posh marketing acts to filter out many applicants who would represent a higher risk.

I thought that they had a minimum 20k income threshold?

At 12,000k I'm not surprised they got a card.
