Which one should I pick?

Having been persuaded to the benefits of a credit card I have decided that I would look into it.

There are many different types of cards and I currently need some help in plain english explaining what each of them do.

I do not plan to spend excessively and I wish to set up a direct debit to pay it off every month to avoid fees, as in just use it like a debit card. I do not spend that much money per month but my main expenses are on things like fuel and food and I also make a number of online purchases.

What type of card do you think I would benefit from? Bearing in mind that I have never had one before so may get rejected!

Thanks to all that reply

As a first timer, usual advice applies, in this order...

    1. Ask your bank (the one that receives your income, pays your bills, and knows more about your finances than anyone).
    2. If your bank reject you, try one of the credit-builder cards such as Vanquis, Aqua, Barclaycard Initial, etc

Of course you could throw a speculative application in for a cashback/reward card if you want to try it? See here...
