Conflicting Opinions on Credit Utilisation

Options
The general consensus I have gathered from reading online is that lower your credit utilisation, the better. i.e. using as low as possible percentage of your credit limit is best.

However, on this forum I have heard people say that to attract the "right kind of lender", it looks best to have high balances and pay off in full each month.

Could someone please clarify if low spending or high spending is regarded as best?

I will pay off in full each month regardless.

Comments

  • The level of spending is fairly irrelevant (although keep well away from your limits). More than 50% tends to be considered too high, anecdotally.
  • TBH you can read threads amongst threads on this forum but the trouble is no one knows.

I never pay a CC off in full but also I never get refused credit or high credit limits yet someone else could do the same but get rejected.

    Every individual is different.

Different lenders have different and unpublished preferences.

Over a 6 year year time frame there are innumerable permutations of credit utilisation. So peoples experiences are different.

Amex Gold. Although I will settle for one of their credit cards if they are not willing to give me a charge card (The highest credit limit I've had is £1000, so they might be wary of giving me an unlimited charge card).
