redoing a year at uni

not sure if this is the right forum.

I have a friend that thinks they may need to redo this year at uni,it's their 2nd year, anyone know what the situation is with the fees for the extra year and what about the grant and loans for living expenses they got for this year, would they have to pay these back and could they get a loan/grant for the extra year? This is in England btw.

Cheers for any help

Have they repeated any years previously?

Have they undertaken any other higher education courses?

no and no, well he did A levels but I don't think you mean that? it's his first time at uni, just his 2nd year, he has had a lot to deal with last year and it's all caught up with him, he's trying to work out what's best to do, either carry on this year and hope he passes onto year 3 or retake year 2 but it's the loans and grants he's worried about.

just to add, he was thinking about doing the teacher training course after his 3rd would retaking a year affect funding for that?

No effect on anything, he'll get full loans and grants for the repeat, and it won't affect the PGCE funding as they're exempt from previous study rules.

All this is providing that he repeats and is in attendance. If he repeats as an external student, only attending for exams, then no funding at all.

thanks for that, can I just check, will he have to pay back any of the loans/grants for living expenses he got for this year?

    Providing his attendance continues, no.

    cheers for the help Taiko.

He's going to try and finish this year, see how he goes, then he can always do resits or redo the year if needed.

It was up up in the air for a while there.

All courses get a "plus one" year from SFE. In other words, no matter what course you do you will have one extra year of funding available to you, so presuming your friend is on a three year course he can stay at uni for four years fully funded. Likewise, if on a four year course, he can have five years etc. Note that this is the time at uni, not the course, so if he switches course after one year then you have already used up your "plus one" year.

A PGCE course is not affected at all by any of this. Your friend will still receive funding for his PGCE.

Yes, he will have to pay back loans for both living expenses and tuition fees for both years. In total he will pay 4 years student loan and tuition fees.

The grants will not need repaying so long as he continues studying throughout. If he stopped attending uni now, he would have to repay 1 semesters worth of grants. If that makes sense?

He will pay them back via the normal method of 9% over the threshold.

I phoned and talked to a great guy from the student finance people, I think you are agreeing with what he said...

You get an extra year funded tuition fees and the loan/grant for living expenses need paying back straight away for any part of a term you don't finish, so if he were to leave with 2 weeks to go in any term, you only pay back those 2 weeks rather than all the loan/grant for that term.
