Baggage delayed - Claim off insurance or airline ?

Just arrived back from a week in Cyprus.
At Manchester AP we checked in two bags, however on arriving at Larnaca only one of the bags was unloaded. We reported the loss to the baggage desk and set off to the hotel. After about 20 phone calls and 30 hour wait the bag was delivered to the hotel.
As the bag contained all my wifes clothes as well as my own ( the other bag was full of baby clothes toys, nappies etc) we had to buy clothes toiletries etc totaling £96 cyp (£120 ish ).
The travel insurance only covers us for £50 for 24 hours delay and £100 for 36 hours. My question is should I claim from the insurance and hopefully get 50quid or try for the full amount from Excel Airlines ?

I'm no expert but if you have an excess on your travel insurance that is usually £50 and that will wipe out the £50 you might get. Also when taking out travel insurance next time they might ask if you've had any claims and put a premium on. Some insurance companies do.
If you can get compensation from the airline I should think that's the best way to go.
Good luck.

Claim from both! Obviously, give each of them details of the other claim so that they can sort out who pays what.
My only relevant experience: I suffered considerable inconvenience (but no financial loss) as a result of a delayed bag. I complained to the airline (Gulf Air) about this and other problems, and was handed about fifty pounds in cahs when I checked in for the flight home. I later claimed on my travel insurance: I did tell them about the payment from the airline but they still gave me another fifty quid. (BTW the insurance came with a Coop bank premier account.)0 -

I'd claim off the airline - I think you must make your claim within 3 weeks though. Here's a link to the detail on the CAA website which may help. http://www.caa.co.uk/default.aspx?catid=306&pagetype=90&pageid=3316#lessthan21days0

HI DAYTONAMICK
WHAT DOES IT SAY AT THE BACK OF YOUR A/LINE TICKET ?
ON MINE ITSAY'S
COMPLAINTS ON BAGGAGE
If the baggage is damaged, delayed, or lost or destroyed. The passenger
must write and complain to the air carrier as soon as possible.
In the case of damage to the checked baggaged, the passenger must write
and complain within SEVEN DAYS, and in the case of delay within 21 days.
Both cases from the date on which the baggage was placed at the passenger's disposal

On the "Sorry for losing your luggage ..." letter it suggested that we claim off our travel or house contents insurance as " the level of cover is likely to be higher than the limited legal cover of the airline ( presumably this means lost luggage rather than delayed ).
Thanks for all your help.0
