Hi Helena,

I've just taken ownership of a property in which it has several electric meters and one gas meter due to the complex structure of this single dwelling.

Two of the electric meters are currently being supplied be E.on and both meters appear to have been newly installed in Sept 2013 despite other meters in the house being over 20 years old (and currently being replaced by another supplier).

Question is, how can I have the meter switched to a single rate meter even though I understand I can ask E.ON to bill me on the single rate tariff. As a new owner of the house, can I have some sort of dispensation to have this mater changed?

Separately, what is your view on old meters i.e. 25+ years old sometimes being more beneficial to customers rather than being replaced?

Thanks.

    Hi ey143

Helena's not here at the moment so hope you don't mind if I reply on her behalf.

You're right, we don't need to change an Economy 7 meter to charge as a single rate. We just add the day and night registers together and charge on a single rate tariff.

If you wish, we can change the meter. There's a charge for this, though. This is currently £51.06 per meter.

The meter is the property of the Meter Operator for the region. It's these guys who are responsible for sorting out a new meter under what's known as a statutory or re-certification change.

Depending on the make and model of meter, they're usually changed after between 10 and 30 years. The Meter Operator will decide this and contact people separately. There's no charge for a statutory/re-certification change.

Also, under a statutory/re-certification change, the Meter Operator will change like for like. If there's currently an Economy 7 meter at the property, this is what they'll fit.

    Hope this is of interest.
