Advice,support required please (age 83)

Hi , i am a Financial Adviser but i need the above please. I have a friend who is a 83 year old partially sighted widow who is getting hideous stick from Barclays. She has no immediate family and just a few friends.

She has one account which over the last year has built up a overdrawn amount of £1,000 of which £750 is made up of charges.

To cut a long story short i have written up a letter for her to sign claiming financial hardship , plus they should never have allowed it to get this bad (irresponsible lending). There was an agreement earlier on apparently with regard to paying back £20pm but this has been withdrawn. The letter also points out that we will go to the ombudsman in due course.

She is being bullied by Barclays , they have no told her she has two weeks and then they are going to take steps to recover the money. The poor woman is petrified out of her mind , this should be on the TV ! Any ideas , any help appreciated ? thanks

You've written up a letter to the Bank on her behalf. Difficult to see what else you can do other than wait for Barclays to reply.
  • So i went to the ombudsman for the lady and he got the debt reduced from £1100 to £250. In the meantime i had completed a ppi form for the lady although she said she had nothing. I got a call at Christmas to visit to get a xmas card and to call Barclays for her to sort out a budget payment system for the outstanding balance. Would you believe it but she received over £9,000 !!!!!!!! truly unbelievable. All debts paid off , no cards , nothing.
For me as a Financial Adviser of over 20 years this was my greatest success , oh and by the way i earned nil but that is not the point is it. So persevere , this took lots of time and letters but we were one step from the bailiffs going in (i had to speak to them) and this is a registered blind lady in her 80's who has no family etc who was frightened witless.
Please make sure Martin hears about this one , beat that !!!!!!
