Foreign Exchange - Credit Card

If I purchase forein currency on my credit card is this classed as a purchase or will it go down as a withdrawal and I'll get hit with all the silly charges?

I think its classed as a cash advance. Travelex have a warning about it on their website:
Please note that the purchase of travel money with a credit/debit card may incur a cash advance fee charged by your credit/debit card issuer. This fee would be levied irrespective of whether your travel money was purchased by phone, over the internet or over the counter. This is NOT charged by Travelex. Switch cards do not incur a cash advance fee.

I have used Visa debit and Switch cards in the past with no charges before I got a Nationwide account.

I take it that means I would get charged excessively and it's not worth bothering with...
  • Can anyone help please? I am going to use both Nationwide credit and debit cards in Turkey in August - has anyone else any experience of using them there and have there been problems? I'm only asking because some people have had problems in other countries who aren't chip and pin compatible.

    Grateful for any advice.
