Contents insurance split between two properties

Hi,

I have googled and searched for this but come up with nothing useful. I wonder if anyone can help.

I am about to embark on a house move, from one rental property to another. Due to the way timings have worked out, I will have an overlap between the two properties, and since they are only half a mile apart I was planning to do the move myself over the next two weeks - moving small (but potentially) valuable things in the car, then hiring a van on the weekend at the end of the fortnight to move big things and complete the move.

However - I do not want to leave increasing numbers of things in the new property uninsured, and unattended. I spoke to my insurers but they say contents can only be insured in the property I am occupying, and not in the new one until I move in.

I do not have the time or money to use a removal company and do it all in one day - surely there is a market need for insurers to have the flexibility to cover two properties - not forever just for a week or two.

If anyone else has been in this situation and found a resolution or a company that will do this - please let me know.

Thanks,
M.

My insurance company covered me at both addresses for 14 days (It was only ever going to need 1 day but this was standard) without any problem. I phoned to ask what the score was and they advised they did it automatically. I assume that this is pretty normal, it's not exactly unusual circumstances.
  • I spoke to my broker (the AA) to ask this and they said it wasn't possible, they'd never heard of it, and no insurance company would do it...

Any idea what insurer you were using? I think it's time I find a new one!

Are you a tenant, like the OP, or an owner-occupier?
