I had a similar issue with a Surface. Connect the laptop to the telly THEN switch the laptop power on. The sound should then come thru via the tv.0 -

What OS are you running on laptop?0

Had the same problem, you have to go into sound settings and enable/ set as default hdmi. No expert so I can offer no how to but I managed it.0

Do post #5 then reboot the laptop.
(I get this sometimes with my Dell laptop).0 -
The windows operating system is 8.1
I've tried rebooting the laptop and going into the sound settings in control panel and the hdmi option is not there even when the hdmi cable is connected to the computer?0 -

The sound can come out of the laptop in many different directions - speakers, headphone socket and the HDMI socket.
Connect the computer to the TV. Goto Control Panel, Sound, and I think there's an output tab? From a list in here you should be able to decipher which output is the HDMI (or test till you can) and set it as the output.
Hopefully you'll only need to do this once and it might automatically switch over when connected.
A hint to help with this - have the TV switched on, and on the input the laptop is plugged into, maximising the chances of the laptop auto detecting that it's been connected.0
