thanks. any chance you can PM me the ebay seller details. would give an extra assurance if you have had good experience!

Sorry XYZ, it's almost 2 years back now, and the ebay details are gone. The area was about 6m+ by about 4m, around 26sq m.

It's a conservatory used by kids as a play area and where we grow tomatoes and stuff, gets a lot of muck carried in. So far the only damage is a slight rip that I did when fitting, (even the supposedly better stuff is quite easily ripped). Other than that it's fine.
Most folks I know that have ruined there's have done it by dragging a fridge or washer out, if you do that you can almost guarantee damage.
For the record I don't like the stuff, any brand, it is too easily damaged although the stuff we have and many other types look exactly the type they are supposed to represent, ie, tiled or oak stripped.
My reasons were simple, it was about 1/4 of the cost of tiles and I wanted to get the room in use, it will get tiled eventually when it fails.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

A few weeks before Christmas we had vinyl put down in our bathroom, ensuite and downstair loo. We went to a local independent first who came out measured then quoted a silly price. We then went to Carpetright who came out measured, talked through the process and came back with a very good price.

One thing that carpetright point out was we might need the floor skimmed in the downstair loo when we took up the old carpet and gripper rods. They were right and we had this done before the fitter came.

I know the big chains are off maligned but to be honest the blokes at our local Carpetright have always helped out with advice and have never done the hard sell. We've been there a few times and to be honest I can't fault them.

The vinyl we had put in wasn't the most expensive, but we plan on replacing the bathrooms in a few years time and just wanted to get rid of the carpet in there and replace them with something reasonable.

  • we has flooring done before xmas - tiles rather than a roll of it.

it was about £1100 for 30sm. in price terms that was about middle of the road for our choice (polyflor i think it was - which is down on price from karndean etc).

this was with an independent shop and they did the latex screed thing on the first day and did the fitting the next day.

the tiles are more expensive than a roll cos of the labour involved but i liked the look of the tiles better.

from what i saw, the carpet right stuff seemed ok but by the time you priced up the prep and fitting etc i am sure there wasn't much in the price. I guess it depends if you like the stuff they have on offer at that particular time.

there was one product (a type of vinyl tile underlay) called instalay. looked decent enough and added a bit of insulation. might be that is useful to use but with anything you need to find someone who is good at using that particular product if you want a good finish

    I have a question:

Why do people go for vinyl?

Is is because it is superior?

    Does it wear the best?

    Does it look the best?

    Is it the most resilient?

    Is it the cheapest?

The answer to nearly all those is no, it isn't, if you except plain chipboard, or spit and sawdust.

But it is a good short term compromise, not the best wearing or looking or even lasting, but it is forgiving to pots and pans and kids in the kitchen, ie, it has it's place.

    :A:A:A:A of course.

Have had mine down in the kitchen for over eight years, yes I did have the floor latexed, and installed. It was not expensive, looks as good as the day it went down

To sum up, the answer is YES.

we had tiles down already -

    they looked dated
    they were cold
    bad for breakages
    not as safe for children

replacement is important and the mess that goes with doing tiles and the ripping up etc

maintaining and changing LVT in the future is a lot more straighforward

it is a bit like anything, there are good products and fitters of both products. looks and finish is very subjective so each to their own but i would recommend decent vinyl well fitted over tiles for young families as it is more practical.

i appreciate not everyone has the same requirements as me so expect this is not applicable for all

You can get wooden floors for £25 per m2. Why would you choose vinyl over wood?

I assumed vinyl would be much cheaper

Sorry that I'm coming late to this but I'm delighted at the sheet vinyl I bought from John Lewis- admittedly only for a bathroom, so a low wear area. Incredibly cheap, about £10-15 per sqM but the main attarction was that it was exactly the colour and texture we needed- matt black with a slight non-slip feel to it. They'd have delivered free too if required.
