asking for specific things during service

Always ask what the service includes, if nothing else it shows you've actually got some interest and knowledge in your car.
Manufacturers will have a recommended service plan depending on the age or mileage of your car although most cars have a quirky part(s) that aren't mentioned in the service schedule but would also be a good idea to check.
I always service my own cars. It's easy, it's a lot cheaper and I know the job is done correctly. I'd fully recommend this route if you have the time and motivation to actually learn.0
