disabled facilities grant

Hi I am having Level Access Shower put in by Care And Repair on a grant. They have said that they will make the shower area put in a extractor fan,Heater and a new door they will not put in a toilet or basin they have also said that they will only tile from were the shower will be to the wall next to it approximately 4.2 square meters the whole bathroom is 10 square meters.

The problem is that in my bathroom I have have white tiles on top half of it all the way round and brown tiles on the bottom half of it all the way round.

I am thinking that if they are not going to touch the other area that means that I will have 2 walls with white tiles on top and brown tiles on the bottom and 2 walls with white tiles from the top to the bottom.

Are they playing a game with me shouldn't they be doing the whole bathroom in white tiles rather than leave it in a mess. And should i ask how much of the grant is left over.

All advice is welcome Thank You

The grant is to install the shower , not to refurbish the rest of your bathroom to match it as well.

Maybe talk to them about putting brown tiles at the bottom of the shower, but if they are more expensive than white tiles they may ask you to pay the difference. Of course there is always the risk that your brown tiles are not suitable for use in a shower.

  • They have even said that if I wanted to have my tiles put on the remaining walls which are not covered in the grant I will have to pay to have the tiles to be taken off and if any plaster comes off I will have to pay to plaster the area as well.

    I couldn't agree more.
Also, the chance of any new tiles matching those that are already there is not high.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

Yes, this is correct as tiling is quite an expensive job as you'll find out should you make enquiries about having walls retiled.

The money available for grants is very limited, so there are limits to the amount of work they can permit in any one home. This means that they can then help more people with grants as the money doesn't get used up by doing whole bathroom refits for people.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

You will have to do what I done , and thats pay for the other 3 walls to be tiled or go without.............Councils have to claw back as much money as possible , so its good to get the most important thing done , and thats your shower fitted.......

When Mum and Dad were having a level access shower put in, we wanted the rest of the room done so Care and Repair priced up the cost of the other work and invoiced us separately for that.
  • Hi I have had my bathroom done under disabled facilities grant from the council the job is all looking good except the wall tiles or in a poor state they haven't been filled in spaces some places over filled with Grout corners sticking out from the edges tiles not smooth so when i rub my hand on them when is high one low.

They are going to charge me £250 for tiling the bathroom what should I do now.

    Thank You

When my parents had their bathroom done by the council, there was a final inspection. We raised several minor issues which we weren't happy about and these were fixed before we signed off the work.
  • Hi sorry for the late reply

The contractor and the senior technical officer from Care And Repair attended yesterday as a joint visit. I pointed out to them that there was a gap not filled in wallpaper damage the bathroom door needed a door stopper because the handle hits onto the tiles and they said we will sort it out.

The major part is the tiles as mentioned before I supplied my own tiles costing £220 the tiles are very poor the trimmings have corners sticking out and chipped gaps not filled in gaps over filled grout just left on tiles as extra and the tiles stick out when I rub my hand over them its all bumpy.

They are charging me £250 for the tiles that they have put on. I said what are you going to do about it and they said that we will change the trimmings fill in gaps and clean it and take off the bumpy tiles off and correct it I said how much will you take off just by counting while standing here there about 20 odd tiles to take off what about the hassle and disturbance and they said we will let you no on Monday.

Can any one advice me what I should do please.

That sounds similar to what happened when my mother had her bathroom converted to a "wet room" with walk in shower.

The council paid for the basic, essential work (which did include a new sink as they had to remove the old one), but only the essential tiling using basic tiles.

IIRC my parents asked the company doing the work and they agreed to bill her for the difference to do more tiling, and to use a nicer tile.

So the council paid for what was specifically required for the basic work, but my parents paid for the extra work to make it meet their aesthetic wishes.
