Responsibility to correct file

Hi there

Bt mistakenly put a red flag on my report and acknowledged this was done in error. However they have told me that the honus is on me to correct the credit report in equifax. Is it correct that I should be correcting my report when it was their mistake?

Equifax told me I would have to find the mistake and then dispute it (rather an bt taking the responsibility) by getting a report for 2quid and have it posted or applying online for free.

I don't live in the uk so I can't have the posted one and that free online one is a pain in the backside. You have to subscribe for a monthly subscription which can be cancelled only by phone which I am reluctant to do from abroad.

Why can't bt just contact equifax and tell them to correct it? It's the same thing anyway, because when I find the flag and report it to equifax then they've got to verify this with bt anyway?

Is it correct that it's only me who can do this?

Help appreciated. Thanks, Jon

  • BT put the error on, they can correct it.

You can raise a query with the CRA, who will talk to BT and hopefully change it.

Is it on Experian and Noddle also?

Thanks for replying. I don't know if it's on the others, they just told me to contact equifax. But good point, I must check. What's the cra?

I do honestly feel some rage about this daft 14 quid a month thing to get your free statutory report and then have to cancel via phone. Unnecessary and annoying.
  • CRA=credit reference agency.

Noddle checks call credit for free.

You will also gave issues with Experian, and might have to sign up to their monthly service, as the statutory one sends a code in the post to access it online.

This has tips on cancelling equifax. I did it via email previously:

    Great, thanks.

Didn't know about noddle, that's good to know. Seems only fair that you shouldn't have to pay for your information.

I'll contact bt first and if to no avail will do the noddle thing.

    Cheers.
