Rights to house with my name not in mortgage

    My wife is joint owner of our house (with me) but mortgage is in only my name. However this was few years back and I don't know if this is possible now.
    Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.

    Agree with the suggestion of getting independent legal advice about where this would leave you. Things can be complicated for unmarried partners :(

    Alongside that, this advice is definitely worth considering.



    I'm not particularly keen on the idea of marriage as an institution myself, but it can provide a useful way of formalising your rights in the event of break-up (I know, I'm a true romantic :rotfl:). You should check, though, whether marriage would itself prevent your partner from getting a mortgage (by affecting his credit record).

    Marriage WOULDN'T affect your partner - only joint financial products link you.

    That said, I'm also in the middle of moving in to a home my partner is buying in his name only, due to my credit history, with no intention of getting married. (Not because we aren't committed to each other - I'm selling my flat to provide the deposit for the new place, but because he doesn't believe in the institution).

    We've talked a LOT about eventualities and potential bad outcomes. There are spreadsheets involved. And we're writing everything we've agreed down and getting it formalised by our solicitors.

    So my advice to you is to be open and honest. If he refuses to talk about then you have a problem -and it's both a relationship problem and a housing problem, IMO. You need a legal agreement, or you are totally without rights (unless you're in Scotland where it's a bit better)
