Content.IE5 folder -how to empty

How do I empty the Content.IE5 folder in

C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local SettingsLocal Settings\Temporary Internet Files ?

Using WizTree I see it's using 1.7GB and has masses of folders with masses of files MBs size, tens of thousands of files !!

I only occasionally use Internet Explorer browser and regularly clear Cache files.

No idea why all these "Temporary Internet Files" are there !

Crazy !

Your best bet would be to download CCleaner - http://www.piriform.com/CCLEANER
It has the facility to clean up a lot of unwanted files, as well as temporary internet files.

limit the size of your cache in ie, tools, internet options, browsing history, settings, disk space

set ie to delete temp files under tools, internet options, advanced

set ccleaner to run at boot and exit when finished
    !!

This single folder has 252,000+ files, when there are 450,000 files on whole 22GB C: drive, 56% of all files on drive !!

    Crazy !

Looks like we've got a Microsoft system problem !

Under yet unknown circumstances there seems to be a problem within Internet Explorer that leads to broken index.dat files. In index.dat files Internet Explorer manages its browser cache. As soon as the file is broken or index.dat file looses sync to the actual files on the disk the problem starts growing: expired files are not completely deleted from the cache, because IE simply "forgot" that they exist. So they remain... forever. During normal "human" use of Internet Explorer this problem does not grow too big, but when you set up one ore more "Full Page Sensors" to monitor a website every minute you do create a lot of internet traffic. In fact every minute for each monitoring request all the HTML files and all their subelements (i.e. images) are stored in the cache because caching is disabled for the Full Page Sensor. These files "should" be cleared from the cache later - if everything works fine. But we have seen cases where several subfolders of the "Content.IE5" folder contained more than 800 MB each (in more than 100.000 files which are often a few weeks or even months old). And what makes things worse: The sheer number of files dramatically reduces system performance, too.

Other applications as well as Internet Explorer may use web browsing and create files there.

For instance as a test I just looked at an email in HTML format in Outlook and that created a file in the content.ie5 folder.

Having said that, 1.7 GB is still rather a lot ..so it suggests something might be wrong.

Well there is a link to a Microsoft Fixit in that article, but it does seem that it only affects XP and earlier systems so it looks like it's been fixed in later versions.

I normallly find the folder in windows and do a 'delete all'.
At the same time go into dos and find the folder and to a 'delete *.*' (don't do a dir!)
I did it around Christmas for someone with a Win7... took about an hour.
    CCleaner did NOT work.
I fancy it may be the result of a corruption by a virus.

    The full file path is Windows \ System32 \ config \ systemprofile \ AppData \ Local \ Microsoft \ windows \ temporary internet files \ content.ie5

Well there were 10's of thousands of Zero byte files, all no doubt taking up minimum file size, yuyks !!

Looks like all these files/directories had been forgotten by Internet Explorer, weren't being limited to 50MB setting on my Pc and were not being deleted when clearing Cache.

Used procedure in this Microsoft link from previous article to delete all these the 250,000+ forgotten/missing files & directories in the old Temporary Internet Files folder.

Temporary Internet Files Use More Disk Space Than Specified
    http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;301057

    Freed ~2GB of space !!

I've been looking for this problem since last year, with hard disk space mysteriously disappearing, as I don't really install anything, looks like I've found answer and 2GB matches size of hole I was looking for.
