Because there is no indication the hotel have acted to pre-authorise my account I may cancel the Halifax card (by reporting it as lost). This way their pre-authorisation will not go through and I will escape a bill for a hotel I do not want to stay at.

    Thoughts?

    Many thanks everyone.

Thoughts? You complain about the hotel without even giving them a chance to rectify your mistake and then you act dishonestly. Hmm...

As the transaction went through before you cancelled the card. It won't stop it going through. Even if they haven't taken the money, they'll have an auth code to take the money from the old card.

So cancelling was a bit pointless really. Unless you're going to tell the bank it wasn't you who made the booking....I really wouldn't do that. Banks are quite hot on that type of small time fraud.

He really can't do that can he? He has already phoned them to ask them to stop the payment before realising the card was 'lost'.
There will be a record of that call on his credit card file.

Yep, but considering he thought cancelling the card would void and existing contract...you never know.

Unfortunately the problem with non-refundable bookings is that they are generally, well, non refundable.

Could you advertise the room somewhere for someone else to stay - if the T&Cs allow that?
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
  • how did you accidentally confirm and enter your details multiple times?

How do you work this one out?
The hotel have not yet received any money - it is with Booking.com.
The hotel may well cancel the booking but why would they want to be out of pocket - who will pay Booking.com 's commission?
The credit card will not get involved with this - please do not spread false hope here.
  • Thanks for the input everyone.

The booking with the hotel still stands.

The credit card has been reported lost, and a new one reissued.

The reason I have done what I have done is because I made a mistake (not reading reviews and rushing into it) and it was a booking for a group of 6 so didn't want to let my friends down with a very poor hotel choice.

I have booked another hotel, but only a £14 deposit has been taken and so it's OK if I loose this - cost of this learning experience!

I will apologise to my friends, explain I've messed up, and continue with the original booking. I'm sure they won't mind too much. Afterall, it's one night, we'll all have had a few drinks and really it's just a place for the night. We won't be staying long!

I did ring the hotel on Saturday to enquire about it (they didn't take my name). I also asked them when the card would be charged and they explained it is usually at the time of check-in / check out therefore I can use whatever card I like at the time.
