Thank you all for the replies - was in Tesco this PM and saw a Panasonic compact which was down from £99 to £49 so bit the bullet and got it!

When weather improves will play with it to see what kind of pics it turns out before the holiday.

No, that's just marketing.
Sensor size and lens quality should be top of the list.

When it comes to lenses, the smaller the zoom, the better. Put it like this, if a lens is sharp when its at a wide angle, does that mean the centre of the elements are 5x sharper than the edges for it to be sharp when zoomed in? Longer zoom lenses sacrifice optical quality for length.

Last time I was in the Grand Canyon I had a camera with a 36mm X 24mm sensor that was 12MP, and a <3x zoom lens.
If I take a trip it there again, I'd take two cameras with primes, no zooms.
... Then again, I had a weight limit if 20kg (total, including carry on) on my honeymoon, so I took 7kg of clothes and got my camera gear down to 13kg.
