'I'll have £250 a month for food and general stuff'.
Not sure what you mean by 'general stuff', but I eat OK and have a VERY greedy cat who eats better than I do and my Tesco bill (home delivery) for 2 weeks is never more than £90 (and sometimes less).
Furthermore you mention a car. Is this really necessary? I am 60 and have never - ever- had a car as health has always prevented me from getting a licence and I have always managed with public transport and the very occasional taxi. Without a car, you also get the benefit of walking/exercise!
I am sure that if you prune away all the non-essentials, you will have more than enough.

    * Just noticed the kosher reference. Why not go further and adopt a vegetarian diet as I did in the 1970s. Much much cheaper (and arguably more enjoyable and healthier!).

just to say that we eat lots of vegetarian meals...i do a chana curry around once a week, with rice with peas, and a big salad alongside. worked it out to be about £1.50/head. and it's ace:D.

It is very do able, you may get the odd set back, but don't give up keeping going.
    Good Luck

Sounds great - got the recipe?

Moving into my own flat soon, so looking to try and make my own meals more and trying to avoid takeaway.
