:( Jigsaw coat went for almost £90 in the end. I can afford it but was annoyed at having to bid that much for a used coat. So I let it go. !!!!!!. I'd already done that whole 'imagining yourself walking around in said coat' stuff. And planned other outfits around it. Ah poo poo poo poo poo

  • Following on from the discussion last night about buying original works of art, one cost-effective option for those wishing to do so is via your local art college.

I would like to do this, but too embarrassed. I wouldn't know what figure to start with that wouldn't be insulting. If they suggested a figure that was way above my intentions how would I back out without sounding that I didn't value their work?

The glib answer would be "Don't be embarrassed" but that wouldn't be very helpful.
So I'll say, "Please try it - you'll really enjoy it, once you've started".

I'll try and offer some real-life advice from my own experiences.
At some of the shows, the works will be priced; but mostly not, so it's a matter of contacting the individual artists first of all (by email etc), and saying something like "I really liked your work at the degree show, and just wondered if it was for sale?" They will reply 'No' - so discussion over; or 'Yes and it's priced at £XX', in which case you agree on that price, or if it's too expensive just say "Thanks, but sorry that is a little out of my price range. Good luck with your future career" etc (all done by email etc so the artists don't even know who you are); or 'Yes, what price were you thinking of?' - which is when it might get embarrassing if you let it. But just think of what, realistically, you think it is worth. (Again, I'll use real-life examples.) An average-sized original painting might be £50 to £150; a piece of ceramics, £30 to £80; a framed photographic print, £20 to £50. Larger works might be more expensive, maybe £100 to £300.
Don't offer an unrealistically low price of a few £££ (not that you would, just talking in general) - mass-produced prints at Habitat for example, say, are £50-£70 or more, limited edition prints £300 and upwards.
Last year I went to this particular degree show, and was interested in buying a couple of works. I contacted the two artists; both didn't give me a price. So with one, I offered £100, but the artist said he was looking for a little more than that (I think it was around £150, which looking back on it I should have paid, but I was restricted to a budget and it was either/or for the two artists' works really). With the other, I offered £200 for a series of three small paintings, which she accepted (was what she had in mind, she said later). So I bought them, and they are now on my living room wall.
As I mentioned in the first post, there is the emotional satisfaction of helping a young artist and giving them the real-world validation they need to pursue their passion as a career. When I bought the three small paintings, I met the artist at the art college to collect them. (I don't know about policemen getting younger, artists certainly are!) She was there with her mum, who was so proud of her - "I always knew she had talent" she said. And it was the first work the artist had sold, and I got the impression that it was a good incentive for her.
There is also the purely financial reward in buying something that increases in value. (Though don't buy as an investment, would be my advice.) Several (probably 15-ish) years ago I bought two paintings by an up-and-coming artist (out of art college but just starting out, really) for around £350, I think (which was a lot of money, then). I bought them because I fell in love with them. But it's also nice to know that as the artist has become famous (painted portraits of royalty etc), those paintings have since doubled or trebled in value - and then add a zero on the end.

Please ask if you want any more advice.:)
