Local Travel Agent and paying deposit with credit card

Options
I booked a holiday with a local travel agent and paid the deposit with a credit card as they have no credit card surcharge on deposits.

Of course they have a 3% surcharge on the balance when paid by credit card.

I suppose they have to make a profit somehow.

So I intend paying the balance in cash, 290 £10 notes withdrawn over a few days from an ATM so I don't have to tell some nosy bank teller why I am withdrawing the money. :rotfl: :rotfl:

Am I still protected for anything going wrong such as the travel agent going out of business even although I only paid the deposit by credit card?

A Nationwide select credit card.

The deposit was £300.

They had a deal that was cheaper than anything I could get online.

The travel agent is ATOL protected etc. I did ask and they have been in business a few years, although they changed their name 2 years ago.

Yes you'll be covered by a credit card even if you only made partial payment so long as the total cost is over £100.

Carrying nearly three grand in cash sounds a bit risky to me though, can't you pay the balance by debit card?

I've just bought a cheap car and did a similar thing, paid £100 deposit on card and the balance of just under £2,400 by debit card.

I was joking, did you not see the 2 :rotfl::rotfl:

You think the rolling faces will indicate to people that you were joking, as opposed to you 'sneakily' avoiding the cashier?
  • You are only covered if you paid the holiday supplier direct. If you paid the travel agent and they pay for the holiday you would only be covered if the travel agent went bust and did not provide you with your holiday as booked.

I'm not sure if you're joking with this too?

But if not, and you know or suspect that it doesn't cost them 3% to process, then write to them citing the Consumer Rights (Payment Surcharges) Regulations 2012, which forbids them to make a profit on the costs of providing credit card payment services.

Then again you may have been joking (and forgotten your smilies) and already knew this?
  • It is so difficult sometimes.

There was a post about someone wanting to withdraw more than £1000 from a bank and was refused.

And yes I did forget the second lot of smileys but I didn't think people were that dense.:p

I suppose I'll have to sign up with a new name now.

So Retiredin2011... You'll be leaving where and heading to with £3k in your pocket on which date and time? ;)

I think your question has been answered above but JonesMFUCforever is right and worth bearing in mind.

Either way, if you do go carrying a few grand in cash around with you then please be careful and maybe consider driving there or getting a taxi :)

    Stay safe!

You might find the travel agent is iffy about taking cash in that quantity.......:)

Good point. Maybe use that reasoning to persuade the travel agent to give a discount for using a credit card.
