What hasn't been mentioned up to now, is that a hole full of rainwater doesn't look like a hole and it's perfectly reasonable to drive over it and find out it's a foot deep hole.

Did just that in heavy rain last night. Limped with puncture to near by pub - bar maid said I was 4th that day to get a puncture in the hole. As I changed the tyre, another car pulled in having just punctured his tyre in same pot hole. I reported it to police as council offices shut & I have extensive damage to my car which will go into dealers tomorrow. I'll try to find out if the hole had been reported to the highways, but I suspect it'll affect my renewal premium.
