EON direct debit seems high.
Hi there, I moved into a new build property in September with my husband. We've finally got our first gas and electricity bill in after contacting EON with readings. It came to £350 in total for 4.5 months over the Winter period. I paid the bill in full and have set up a direct debit online for future payments. They have stated our direct debit will be £127 per month. This seems high to me given our usage over the Winter period and the fact we have currently a zero balance.
Are EON trying to overcharge me? I'm reluctant to keep the direct debit if this is the case and will just submit monthly readings and clear the bill in full.

£127 a month - £1,524 a year ?
On the basis of your present winter bill of £350 for Sept 13 - Jan 14 the £127 D/D seems excessive
The rule of thumb is that 80% of your gas bill is incurred the Winter months, whilst the Elec consumption remains fairly stable over the year with a small rise of around 20% in the winter - Have a look at the Gas/Elec Kwh consumptions on this first bill and work out a rough figure of what they will be over a year.
With so little useage history you are likely to have a hard time trying to convince someone on Eons Customer Service Desk that your D/D should be immediately reduced
You will stand a much better chance when you have the next bill in Late March/April, as then you will have figures covering the entire Winter0 -
Read you meters yourself, every month and send a reading into your suppliers. That way they'll get a far better idea of what your consumption rather just making guesstimates and so will you.
You can also then work out what your direct debit should be yourself. Regular reading of the meter will also help you monitor and control your consumption.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
If you go online you can amend your direct debit easily through the eon site if it looks like it's to high and you are going into credit. It is a lot easier than ringing them as they don't normally do it over the phone.Mortgage value was £135,000 now £43,218
TCB total £12000 -
You cannot amend a 'direct debit' the originator (utility) retains full control of all amounts.
Since the OP paid their first bill on presentation, they are being strongarmed into entering into a payment plan. Far better to go for whole bill debits only, and not let then take guesstimated amounts on the pretence of it being 'easier'.0 -

Hi jb1305,
I'm sorry for coming in on this one a bit late
It's really hard at the moment to get your usage right, as there won't be any history for the property.
It also depends on size, insulation, appliances etc.
dogshome is right, you'll use more now with it being winter. However, this can be divided throughout the year with a Direct Debit.
The best thing to do is to take as many reads as you can and get a good picture of your usage.
If you feel the monthly payments are to high, I'd suggest looking at the Direct Debit tool on the website and also check the tariffs as well. You cannot amend a 'direct debit' the originator (utility) retains full control of all amounts.
.
We have a tool on the website called the Direct Debit manager, this is something customers can use to change their own payment amounts and look through the calculations and figures.
If I can help you jb1305, just let me know.
