clean credit file, £51k salary - declined credit

Options
I have been declined credit (cc balance transfer now twice in the past year) and am struggling to undrestand why it might be.

I have a santander CC and 12mts ago the balance was approx £2000, I applied to one lender to transfer but this was declined.
At that time i then requested a copy of my credit file, it shows perfectly clean. No missed payments on anything, ever.

I have just reapplied for another transfer with a lender different to the one before. The satander balance is now £950 but again it was declined.

I am unsure why this is so given my circumstances.
earnings before tax £51k
homeowner for 14 yrs with mortgage payment £380pm
lived at this adrs for 14 yrs
No debts/loans except for mortgage & £950 on credit card.

Anyone have any sugggestions on why this may be? It is very frustrating and i am afriad to apply again as i understand it doesnt look good on the credit file.

There are three different credit reference agencies, it is worthwhile, if you have not already, getting a copy of all 3

How many dependents do you have? I would have thought with £51k salary and mortgage being only £380 you would have savings
  • Have you tried MSE's soft eligibilty checker that doesnt leave a mark on your credit files? http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/credit-cards/balance-transfer-credit-cards#eligibility

Like Caz I would have thought that you should have savings rather than borrowings on what you have said. You should be able to clear the card balance in less than a year, so the Fluid 0% for 12 months with only a 0.75% fee would be your best choice for a BT card

Your salary has little impact on the decision for a credit card (too many people inflate their salary for applications) - it's more likely to be something on your credit report that they don't like.

Have you checked all three credit reports? (Experian, Equifax, Callcredit/Noddle)

Go through them with a fine tooth comb - ensure there are no inaccuracies or inconsistencies (even with addresses etc).

Make sure your electoral roll registration is showing on each of your three credit reports.
  • I have 2 dependants and a small amount of savings, they are aside for some things i will purchase this year.
The card i was declined was the fluid 0% 12mth.
i think I will request my credit report from the other two companies and have them all checked in detail.
Interestingly the MSE eligibilty checker showed most cards at 90% however the fluid was only 50%.
    Thanks for the advice.
