Astronomical Electric Bill

My wife and I live in a rented shotgun house with 12 foot ceilings in New Orleans. This has been an unusually cold winter and our electric bill shows it it went from 63 dollars in September to 443 dollars in January. This is too much to pay. The house is built up a couple of feet off of the ground, probably not much insulation, hot water heater in a small shed surrounded by buildings.

We are not over heating, never over 70 degrees, but in extreme cold the temperature in the house doesn't rise above mid 60's. we are always a bit chilled.

As I said we're renting and the landlord isn't going to invest in any renovations to "help us" save money.

So, any advice on things we can do to reduce our bill short of turning off heat and freezing?

    Get in a new house?
This is a UK based site. While there are people from all over the world, and of course MSE welcomes visitors from all nationalities, it is still a UK based site, therefore things are very different where you live.

There are many threads on how to insulate and such but being in a rented house may pose problems.

The only way to reduce your bills is to use less, either by insulating or turning stuff off or down. These work whichever side of the Atlantic that you live
If that's not possible then you'll just have to move.

    Perhaps it's a semi-detached - it's "riding shotgun" with another house!
