Finding work with a mental illness

Ok to cut a long story short I've been on long term Incapacity benefit (Now WRAG - ESA) for several years due to some serious mental health problems. Now I really want to try and get back into work but because of my current situation finding a normal job is almost out of the question.... So I was just wondering if there are any companies or organizations here in the UK that either employ or help find work for people with mental health issues or disabilities..I've tried searching Google but I haven’t had any success and the websites my benefit adviser gave me to look at don't even cater for people with my problems.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Tia

The problem is people with mental health issues will have different issues and different needs as a result. Someone with OCD will need an organised an clean environment, someone with social phobia will need little interaction with the public, someone with depression will need minimal stress etc.... so can't have a company that will be mental health friendly for all disorders.0

Some charities will take volunteers on with mental health problems, which would give you some work experience to help with looking for paid work.
What sort of work are you looking for?The best portion of your life will be the small, nameless moments you spend smiling with someone who matters to you.0 -
I would certainly start with taking on some voluntary work. I think you will find it helpful in the long term, and it will build up your CV and show future employers that you are gaining some experience.0

In terms of exclusively employer, not really. Though there were/are organisations such as Remploy.
There is the two ticks scheme (Positive about Disability). Any employer who is a "two ticks" employer has shown good practice and positive attitudes toward employing those with disabilities and disability awareness. Any applicant with a disability who applies for a job, and meets the minimum requirements, is guaranteed an interview.
All empoyers are legally obliged to make reasonable adjustments and provide support, but a two ticks employer is particularly likely to show positive, supportive attitudes.
Also mental health charities tend to view applications from those with mental health conditions more favourably.0 -

If you are under 30, look at the Princes Trust website as they seem to run schemes to get people back into employment
Perhaps you could ask for organisations that help the vulnerable back into work on the Disability and Dosh forum.
Why do you say that conventional employers will shun you (you may be right, I'm just asking) - are you finding that you are getting a lot of job rejections?0 -
I second the two ticks scheme
Most applications ask if you are disabled, if you feel it are then declare it. I'm not sure if my employer is but I did declare it and still managed to get the job despite being on ESA for 3 years due to my disability/illness (I'm bipolar). There ARE employers that will give you a chance if you meet the criteria so please don't be afraid of it.
Voluntary work is always a good thing, as it can give you experience and references and ease you back into workThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
