Credit rating and DCAs

Options
Hi All!

I'm worried about my credit rating. While at university my landlord was found to not have an HMO licence and as a result my house-mates and I were evicted several months before the end of my tenancy agreement. The landlord was taken to court and ordered to repay me over £1200 (they have refused and so I am going to take them to court - but that's another story).

Recently I had a letter from a debt collection agency. I thought this was weird as I had paid all my bills. I rang up the electricity supplier on whose behalf the DCA was collecting the money. The electricity company told me that the landlord was attempting to claim that we were resident at the flat until the end of the lease and are thus liable for the electricity after we left. I have emailed the DCA my proof that I was no longer resident (and was paying council tax, rent and utilities at another property). I was no longer paying rent to my landlord when they evicted me and my house-mates.

The galling thing is that the DCA (at the instruction of the landlord) is trying to claim that one of my former house-mates also owes the money...even though she was not on the latest tenancy agreement as she moved out a year before!

I am worried that this will damage my credit rating. Can anyone please offer some advice?

View you credit files and see what's on there first and get your evidence together to dispute it. Sounds like another classy landlord.
