Google and Apple map on iPhone, can't they do better design

Why iPhone needs internet data to show the map. Even simple TomTom works brilliantly without any data/big processer but the big giants they can't make it better design.
Recently i forgot to take my TomTom and started using iPhone maps, but it never worked there was no connection to the remote areas.

Except tomtom charge you for map updates where google give them for free.
Preinstalled tomtom maps take up how much space? Where google maps only downloads the parts you need.
You can download maptiles for a given area at home and use offline also.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
There are offline maps available in the Apple Store but they take about 700 MB if I'm not wrong0

With Google maps on Android, you can actually specify a map area and download it to memory. Handy for sa nav in remote locations. Sounds like there's similar in the Apple version of the maps.
Tom tom maps for the UK are a couple of Gigabytes. Even an hours journey only uses 10Mb or so.0 -
