Insurance for a flat share.

My son, who recently was the victim of flooding due to the recent bad weather, has made a claim off his home insurance. Having got a quote of £20pm for insurance over 6 months ago he has told his flat sharer and asked if he would mind contributing half, which seemed fair.
The guy has said he doesn't believe in insurance, which of course his prerogative, the question is now there is need to claim, he has given my son a list of things to add to his claim.
He told the guy that he is not prepared to add his items, which add up to around £500, and he is turning nasty saying that as the items were in the property and it was insured he is automatically covered, the fact that he didn't contribute to the monthly payment is of no consequence.
What does anyone think he should do, and is the guy right.

Presumably the guy's property wasn't insured, so he cannot claim off your son's insurance.
  • No specific items are mentioned on the policy, just contents, he is saying that his property is part of the contents so he is eligible to claim.

what a git, so he wouldnt pay for insurance but now wants the benefit of it. perhaps he should believe in it now.

he cannot add his things to your sons policy as its not his policy anyway.
  • Is his name on the insurance policy? No. Is he a family member or partner? No. So he is not eligible to claim. He would have had to have bought his own insurance.

If he feels he is automatically insured then your son should tell him to go ahead & try to claim himself for his items. He'll soon see how far he gets when he not only can't give a policy no. or details, but isn't even the policy holder.

I'd be looking for another flat mate or flat share as soon as I could if I were your son. What a moron he is sharing with currently.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

The guy has said he doesn't believe in insurance,
What he means is he doesn't believe in paying for insurance but still wants to claim - what a clown.

Give him the claims hotline and say he will need to make his own claim. Dont give him a policy number though.

Make sure any insurance paperwork is kept away from them.

I wonder if they are the type that always has to leave the pub before its their round?
