Humm I'm not sure I agree with you people. Strada and Bella Italia are really good authetic food.

One thing I noticed is the smokje aslot more, maybe the smoking has affected the Italian s ability to taste.

My sister works in Bella Italia and only 2 of them smoke

Bella Italia's food is awful. It's far from authentic esp the stuff that is microwaved!
Since starting again after beanie: June 2016: Child development DVDs, Massive Attack tickets. July: Aberystwyth trip, hotmilk nightie. Aug: £10 Hipp Organic vouchers, powerpack. September: Sunglasses. October: £30 poundland vouchers.
  • I think you ate on a single restaurant. Taste vary restaurant to restaurant. I love Italian food & it's Awesome.

I'm an Italian national. If you think that Strada and Bella Italia offer "really good authentic Italian food" then YOU have lost your ability to taste and to discern. Sorry . :)
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.
  • That's a shame! I love fresh Italian food! :j
  • Hi happenstance,

I must say I don't agree with your comment about 'good Italian' at Bella Italia or Strada. However I do agree with you about how terrible the food in Rome is.

I spent the weekend there for my birthday in January (joined my boyfriend for work who had been there for two straight weeks) and everywhere we ate left me wanting.

I've been lucky enough to experience amazing food in other parts of Italy in previous years so know just how good it can be.

In Rome this just isn't the case.

We tried several different types of restaurants (two breakfasts, three lunches, three dinners), they all varied in caliber, some on the main streets and some off the beaten track. We went to a VERY expensive restaurant for my birthday meal and had a cheaper dinner on the last day in a family run restaurant.
Absolutely everywhere was shockingly bad... I'd be upset if my local Strada served it up.

I feel the problem is that Rome has turned into such a tourist trap that the food really does fall below expectations as everyone is trying to cash in where they can.

As my boyfriend was there for work (outside the centre of Rome), he found two very good restaurants that were a fraction of the price of anywhere we ate in Rome, but most importantly, the food lived up to the good Italian name.

My conclusion is, go to Rome for the architecture and history but not the food.
Save your taste buds for Northern Italy where they still value good service and good food.
  • I was in Rome last month, my first visit to Italy and thought the food was lovely. We ate in places recommended by locals. I thought it was simple but lovely. Came back and ate in Carluccio's - I got pasta with burnt spinach balls and the sauce was a watery broth :(

The Italians we were with did say that the Egyptians make much better pizza than the Italians.
