Amex: unathorised transaction from my debit account!!!!!

Options
Noticed earlier this week Amex have debited an unauthorised payment of £30 from debit account, the account which I normally pay my credit card off fully every month.

I called them and they claim it could be an insurance I signed up which I haven't, been with Amex 10months with 3 cards and always paid on time and min bill comes at £200. This £30 came out my debit account half way through the billing month which is very random. Nearly 5 days I have not herd from them.

I am not in behind in payment and I have not used the card to withdraw cash, so I am baffled at this.

What are my right for an unauthorised transaction from my debit account and can I claim for compensation?

  • I don't quite understand your post. Are you saying that Amex has collected a DD from your current account?

    What does your statement say?

I had a problem a few years ago where I paid off the statement mid month (>£1k) and then several weeks later they collected the full amount again via Direct Debit (including the amount I'd already paid) sending me overdrawn.

They tried to explain it was intentional and not an error but they offered to pay any overdraft charges so I think it was!

They took £30 from my account in the middle of my billing month. I have paid every bill in full so i cannot understand what this payment is for. The bill gets generated 14th and I pay around the 17th. This £30 transaction was made on 2nd Jan.

In my statement it shows the same details as it does when I normally pay the bill in full.

Is it an annual fee for the card? Or did you inadvertently sign up for insurance of some sort?

Only AMEX can answer your question.

Compensation for what? Have you suffered a finanial loss for the withdrawal that wont be put right by giving back the £30? (if it is a mistake)

Call your bank and ask them to reverse the transaction under the direct debit guarantee.

It would be better if bikeman tried to resolve this with Amex first.

If bikeman has inadvertently agreed to the insurance, cancelling the DD might result in Amex charging bikeman a £12 return payment fee in addition to the £30, and perhaps putting a late payment marker on bikeman's credit file.

    Lots of exclamation marks.

My money's on the customer misunderstanding something that they agreed to.

It would be nice to hear the outcome though.

If it's a direct debit you can ask your bank to refund the account under the Direct Debit Guarantee.

If it's an unauthorised transaction you can ask for a chargeback.
and can I claim for compensation?
If an error has been made by AMEX and it has taken you time to resolve then I would say you should ask them for an ex-gratia payment. As it stands, don't expect more than £20.
