I don't see why not. As they have a no phone policy on the premises they can enforce it however they wish.

Can you think of any legislation that might stop them as I can't

Have you actually asked if they have done this? There are several reasons why somewhere could become a signal black spot.

Setting aside the legality of something that you do not know they have done, why would they have to inform you. The employer has a no phone policy therefore you wouldn't know whether your phone worked or not because you aren't using it, are you? So seeing as you aren't using it you wouldn't know whether it works on their premises or not. Or are you planning on informing the employer that you are breaking their policy?

Of course, the employer has other options. They can discipline you every time you use a phone in contravention of a clear policy that you know about, and eventually you will be sacked. Is a phone call really worth that?

It would depend on how the ban was worded in any documentation/your contract.

An employer can of course ban mobile phones.

If they've gone to the expense of installing jammers then they, I assume, probably found that employees wouldn't adhere to their earlier policies of being told not to use them and that use of mobiles in work time was detrimental to the company?

Unfortunately a lot of people act like children at work and with the best will in the world won't obey sensible work policies all of the time.

If lunch breaks are staggered then it would not be practicable to switch off jammers, if they are not then talk to you manager about having the jammers switched off during lunch hours only.

It's not ideal that the company has seemingly taken this action but the 'blame' for it has to lie with those who have broken the rules amongst the staff IMHO.
Unless specifically stated all posts by me are my own considered opinion.

Our manager told a guy yesterday who was caught using his phone that all our phones will no longer work within the premises as the company had to act because certain people were flouting the rules, so everyone suffers, im sure everyone here sends a few sneaky texts during work hours, or goes online for whatever reason.
