Paxo sage and onion stuffing ! It was my sister's job to mix it for Sunday lunch. To this day its the only stuffing I eat, not interested in these "gourmet" concoctions made of fresh ingredients (outrageous !) you can buy/make nowadays0

Lentheric 'Tweed' and Helena Rubenstein 'peaches and cream' compact powder. There was also tights came onto the market called Taylor-Woodwards Lifelons. They were supposed to be guaranteed for 6 months against ladders and cost 10/6d a pair.A lot of money when you only earned around a fiver a week:):) All Rimmel products cost 1/3d to buy and was the cheapest make-up on the market. You could buy nail polish,powder,foundation,eye-shadow,mascara,or lipstick and everything cost the same.I was lucky that my late Dad worked as a chemist so I got slightly better make-up at cost price. At Christmas I would buy my late Mum Goldsmiths 'White Fire' perfume It came in a scarlet box and only seemed to be sold at Christmas.
There was a wash-in wash-out hair colouring that cost 4/6d a box I think it was called Colour Glow.
I wasn't allowed to have pieced ears until I was 16 and I paid to have them done myself. It cost 2/6d and was done in a jewelers shop with a thin needle and a cork.the 2/6d incuded a pair of gold 'sleepers' In the train on the way to work I read the Valentine or Mirabelle and swapped picture of the current pop-stars with my pals .I like Elvis, but not Cliff, Paul Anka and Johnny Ray.The cinema showed movies like Rock Around the Clock and the kids all jumped up when Bill Haley started playing and we danced in the aisles.
I never had a front door key until I was 16 either but until I was 18 I still had to be in by 10.00 unless it was a special Saturday night dance I was going to, then it was 10.30..I was married and 22 before I ever crossed the threshold of a pub.Pubs were for old men and smelt awful.:):)0 -
my aunt wore 'Tweed' and I loved it - until the shop I worked in sold it - and all those customers spraying the testers all day really put me off it! I cant smell it now without feeling sick!
my nans 'signature' perfume was 'midnight in paris'. very unlike her as it was a very sophisticated (or thought of as such) perfume. I found a bottle in her drawer when we cleared out the house after my aunt died. I opened it and wished I hadn't! smells bluddy awful - really cheap and nasty!0 -
Jackie - do you remember how you didn't need to actually go to town? you had 'pedlars'! some guy would knock on the door and offer to sell you almost anything? Brushes? Polish? Ribbons and Lace? Bakers would often send the 'boys' out on the bikes to sell loaves or pies. or later on in the day they offered 'cakes'! we even had a 'fish and chip' van come round two nights a week! dunno why - our village had two fish and chip shops!
I can remember sending a friend into one to ask for 'scrumps'. (the bits of batter fished out when the fish was cooked). and of course mum heard about it and I got into trouble. cos I knew this chippy owner gave them away for free. and mum saw that as begging. but they were gorgeous! he even doused them in salt and vinegar!0 -
I remember the excitement of buying a new Single or LP. The trip into town and going into Boots or Woollies. Searching through the racks and taking the record to the counter before going into one of the little booths to listen to it first via a telephone or headphones before buying it. Then carrying my prized purchase home all excited. Playing it as soon as I got home and being told to turn it down:rotfl:
So different these days, a few clicks and it's downloaded onto a device and listened to immediately. I like tangible things so still buy everything on CD, but I still have most of my vinyl and theres something nice and nostalgic about the crackle. At least CDs don't warp in the sun, but records still played even when scratched, CD's jump or are just unplayable.
Cider lollies were my favourite too:) and I loved nut cracknels I used to pinch and then hide them as soon as the tin was opened. Funny someone was to mention the Chinese figs earlier. Mum was saying at Christmas how she missed them and couldn't find them anymore. They were always part of our Christmas along with Newbury Fruits.
Doeas anyone remember frozen cream sticks. Mum always had a bag or two in the freezer and when she was out or wasn't looking I would nab one because we rarely had ice cream and I liked them better anyway0
