I miss the old wooden counters in Woolworths, where when I was 6 I would spend ages choosing between an exercise book with a budgie picture on the front cover, or a rainbow pad which was smaller but filled with lovely coloured paper. I've loved stationery ever since those days.
Woolies also sold small bottles of Rimmel "perfumes" in small glass tube bottles. Some flavours had white screw-tops and some had gold coloured tops - I used to ignore the white ones and only ever smelt the gold topped testers.
I loved those paper dollies where you cut out the picture of the dolly and her clothes, which then fitted on her body with small paper tags. Who remembers those painting books where the pages looked blank until you painted them with plain water and a brightly coloured picture would emerge
My 2 siblings and I went through our childhoods in the 1950's and 60's with this sort of toy and I never ever feel that we lost out. But then, everyone we knew was in the same boat.0 -
This is my last post on the subject, promise !
What happened to those lovely boxes of chocs with pictures of thatched cottages and fluffy kittens on the lids ? They were always sustantial not filmsy and edged in "gold" , the lids lifted off completely, not joined at the back as nowadays. I think they are ripe for a come-back and would be very popular.0 -
I remember those. I had a box of chocs that was like a treasure chest in shape, but was all flowery with gold edges. I kept the box for years and used it as a jewellery box.0

Yes so did I, they were a bit special. I kept all my best hankies in mine. Now there is a thing, real hankies, not tissues

I used to love those traffic light lollies. Sometimes we had the chocolate (flavour) covered ones, too! Good times.SpecialBrew wrote: »Other items in the chemist's included sachets of Linco Beer shampoo, and Shaders and Toners, which were sachets of 'temporary' hair colouring that were popular with us in my teens because you were supposed to be able to colour your hair on a Friday night and the stuff would come out when you washed your hair ready for school on Monday when the weekend was over.
I saw Shaders and Toners a couple of years ago. Fabulous way to colour your hair and get a rollicking when you got home for staining the bathroom tiles because you forgot the sachet was there after you went to dry your hair.SpecialBrew wrote: »An honourable mention has to go to my Pippa doll. I'm far too old to miss that kind of thing, but Pippa was still better than Barbie or Sindy any day of the week
Totally agree. I had a Pippa doll (makes me laugh now as someone told me what "Pippa" means in Italian and Greek:eek: ) and a Mandy doll. Wish I still had them, I've seen how much they sell for on eBay!

Does anyone remember a chocolate bar called Coffee Crisp ? It was different from Toffee Crisp.
I don't remember these from childhood but what I do know is that they are still made by Nestle in Canada. My sister brought me back 12 bars when she visited there last year. They are now all gone alas but the pound shop near where she lives was carrying packets of these "bite-sized" yummys at Christmas. I bought several of them obviously.
Cider ice lollies from the ice cream van on a hot Sunday afternoon.
Good Lord! I had completely forgotten about these delights. Also milk-lollies from the ice-cream van. Where did those go to?
Another one: Squirrel brand Floral Gums. How I miss them!0 -

Don't know who made it, probably Rowntree, I am sure it wasn't Cadbury.
