Need new kitchen - where do I start?

Hi
We have a galley kitchen and are thinking or knocking through into our dining room to have a large kitchen with an island.
I have no idea where to start! The room is not square so I think we need some plans but DH thinks that an architect would be too expensive.
I have an idea of what I want but would like some recommendations on where to buy from. I've heard a lot of good things about German kitchens but do not know any names to look out for or where to buy them.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Where to start? Go to look at kitchen showrooms, talk to the sales people

They all have in house designers no need for an architect and some sites have interactive features where you can play about with the design. Think IKEA has a good one

You don't need an architect if you're only knocking one wall down. Just get some kitchen companies in for ideas.

regards knocking through , get a good local builder round to talk it through with

  • Get a free design from one of the big boys and then hawk it around to a good independent kitchen retailer.
My experience Wickes £11.5K independent retailer £6K.
    Shop around.

Anyone recommend German kitchens? I'm sure everyone raves about how good they are!

Not German, but I can recommend Benchmarx - got my kitchen from there, they did the design and supply and I got a kitchen fitter to install it.

I used DIYkitchens, they are a online retailer but do a wide variety of kitchen cupboards. We measured up and designed the kitchen ourselves.

Overall they are inexpensive and really good quality.

OP if you identify in Kent where you are based, someone may be able to suggest a builder / fitter.
