Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 dual problem

Hi all, hoping someone out there has experience of this and can offer some advice.
My son's SGT2 7.0 has the dreaded "red cross" when charging the battery. Is there a way to get rid of this short of sending it back to Samsung?
The device is not rooted.
Also, it does not connect to any computer when plugging in via USB. The computer doesn't even acknowledge that a device has been attached. I have installed the samsung drivers, tried Kies, enabled developer options and checked the USB debug box, but all to no avail.
Anyone any thoughts on these issues? Would be most grateful.
