Local scrap yard? Usually some company will buy any car and sell it for parts.

I have got rid of two old bangers this way.

One actually gave me fifty quid more than I paid for it originally!

Ring around your local breaker yards/scrappies to see who's paying the best price including collection. Make sure you get an end of life certificate of whoever scraps it for you.

Yep, a scrappie is easiest. As long as it's a kosher place they'll sign the V5 form to let the DVLA know the car has been officially scrapped as well.

You could break it for parts yourself and sell the bits on eBay or wherever, but to be honest that's usually more trouble than it's worth.

    that makes absolutely no sense.

New brake pipes, calipers, discs, pads - none of these would "damage axle" and are easily/cheaply replaced.

It does make some sense - these have a reputation for electrolytic corrosion between the rear caliper and the bolts holding it to the hub. As a result, removing the caliper can be a bit of a !!!!!!, short of getting medieval with an angle grinder.

However, it also probably says quite a bit about the mechanic. It's certainly not that difficult or rare a problem. It may very well, though, push a borderline car into "uneconomic to repair" territory.
  • Donate it to local college for students to work on or give it to local fire station to practice roof removal on.
  • There's always this solution too:
