The great mattress hunt

Hello all,

Hoping to connect with someone with more knowledge than me for some advice on purchasing a new mattress.

Rarely have I encountered such an obfuscated industry as mattress manufacturing! Having spent a month looking into the options, I have even less of an idea than why I started.

The fake sales, marketing gimmicks, store specific model scams and general attitude of the sales people in high street bed shops has really got on my wick.

I'm looking for a zip together (due to delivery on a narrow staircase) super king size mattress. Surely it cannot be this hard? lol.

I'd appreciate any pointers you might have as my back has called time on me and getting a good nights sleep is impossible at the moment.

Edit: Price is not really the main consideration but ideally less than £2,000 if possible. Quality is the most important thing though.

Thank you :)

These guys are pretty good, more top end products and lots of advice on their. http://www.factory-beds-direct.co.uk/

I'd say you want to go for a pocket sprung mattress, either topped with natural fillings, latex or memory foam.

1000 springs plus up to around 3,000 mark. Many more springs then that then you are just paying for a gimmick. In fairness 2,000 plus springs is a bit gimmicky. But I have recommend one mattress over and over due to greats value for money and that does have 3,000 springs.

The mattress in question is made Restus called the Crystal.

Restus make some mattresses for John Lewis and Next.

That model is available in a 6ft Zip n Link as well.

I bought my zip together king size mattress from factory beds direct.
After taking their advice went for a springs and latex topped mattress.
It is the most amazingly comfortable mattress and cost around a quarter of what you wish to spend:)

You can get a waterbed through any door and up any stairs (before it's put together and filled)!
  • Did you see the recent Which survey report on mattress quality? http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2541874/Saggy-truth-2-000-mattress-Luxury-bedding-beaten-place-test-one-costing-tenth-price.html

Best mattress I have ever had came from Muji. Not sure if they do zip up type. Good luck!

But the mattresses are chalk and cheese. One is a traditional sprung mattress and one is a big block of foam. Hardly like for like products.

To clarify, the one I have has the springs. Bought it years ago in Japan - didn't know they do foam only mattresses too.

I don't know about £2k for a mattress but I bought one of these from Memory Foam Warehouse and I think it's brilliant value for £429. I find it very comfortable and it was delivered tightly bound so was very easy to get up our very narrow staircase.

2000 pocket sprung with a 4cm layer of memory foam on top.

About 5 years ago, I bought one of the Silentnight memory foam mattresses that come vacuum packed rolled up and I love it! It's really comfortable (I have arthritis and spinal problems) and only cost £199 on ebay (RRP was £399). I'm not sure if you can still buy the exact model I have, but they have several newer models:

I think they only go up to king size though and although really easy to get into your bedroom, I guess the only way you could get it out again would be to destroy it (when you open them, they expand to a fully formed mattress that can't be re-rolled), so maybe not a great suggestion in your case!
