Newham: plenty of 3 bedroom council properties available

It's a long story... but my tenant asked me to evict her so she could go homeless... she paid all bills etc and court costs...
She was told by the council, Newham, that if she became homeless, then they had 3 bedroom properties to give
Last Monday was her last day...
She went homeless... the same day, she was offered a 3 bedroom place...
OK... so you think this is NOT true??
I missed a small point: she was offered a place in Birmingham!
Some people like the brummy accent
The tenant was a lovely decent person, I hope they gave her a place in a good area at least - she accepted

Can't be any worse than Newham.0

Guess that's part of the policy some Councils have recently introduced of "shipping" their Council tenants/would-be tenants off to somewhere else in the country. I was surprised, in my last area, to be told that some housing there had apparently been designated as "for those from other parts of the country to get shipped into".
All the more surprised, because local little me, had had to really "fight my corner" some years previously to get given public sector housing.
Wonders if all Birmingham "locals" that require public housing have got it then and there is spare available for "others"?0 -
Hasn't Newham got the largest council housing waiting list in the whole country? No doubt they have had to come up with a scheme to try to ship tenants to areas where perhaps local authority housing is not so much in demand.
Or, knowing how local government like to throw tax payer's money around, perhaps there is finance involved. A price to pay for each family rehoused in that area. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
James Turner Street ?Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.0

I did think she was being optimistic when she told you the council informed her that she would definately secure a council property from them. I provided a link then that Newham council was shipping off homeless people to hotels in Birmingham. At least she secured the property in the size she wanted - was it a council property or private?

"Over half a billion pounds has been spent in London on emergency housing for people who have become homeless since 2010....
the east London borough of Newham spent £35 million.
The figures, gained through Freedom of Information requests, also revealed that last year there were more than 180,000 people on local authority housing waiting lists in London."

As far I know, if you don't have anywhere to live and you apply to the council for help as a homeless person, the council has to provide accommodation immediately while it makes enquiries into your situation. The council has to provide temporary accommodation. Emergency accommodation is only meant to be short-term and many areas have very little emergency accommodation available. Because there is a shortage of housing in some areas, you may have to wait for an offer of settled accommodation, but the council will house you in temporary accommodation while you wait. If the council agrees it has a legal responsibility to provide temporary accommodation for you, you are allowed to stay in that accommodation until you are able to move somewhere more settled. You may be able to find somewhere yourself. If you can't, the council may be able to offer you a permanent council tenancy or an assured tenancy with a housing association or a private landlord.0 -
We have no less than 5 housing associations in our local town from different parts of the country.
Housing boom around here with people coming from all parts of the country!
Cheap land, brown field sites, building on small plots ( OLD PUBS!) and all 2/3/4 bed affordable housing!
London councils have sent letters to many councils/housing associations up north asking for affordable housing and willing to pay to rehouse people of the housing list.
Moving the poor and unemployed out of London!0 -
London has been clearing its slums into neighbouring counties for decades.Been away for a while.0
