When I opened up my account I didn't have a sim and so gave them my nieces number just for one code. After that, I kept trying to have it deleted, including calls to head office and promised they are not storing it, but she still receives texts now. Once they have your number, they will NOT delete it under any circumstances. In the end I bought a cheap lyca sim just to have my record updated (I don't use a mobile).

But, I notice on the web, there are free services where they give you a mobile, and any text sent to it is published realtime. It isn't secure, but it means you could perhaps receive a text.

I wonder what the logic is, behind texts like this. I mean, anyone can buy a sim for 99p, so if a transaction turned out to be fraudulent, then all they would know is, the suspect bought a sim for 99p. What layer of security does this provide?

The issue for me was, when I opened the account, they promised me I didn't need a phone (as I didn't have one), so I used my nieces number 'just once' so set up some payments.

Then I found I couldn't delete it, only change it, and changing it triggers a text to the old and new number.

So I went to branch and they couldn't delete the number, but put me on the phone to head office, who promised it had been deleted.

And a year later, I tried to change my address, and it sent a text to the deleted number, my niece. I was abroad, so with the time difference, it went early morning.

So I complained online, and registering the complaint triggered another text to her phone. About a week later, she got another text to say the complaint had been resolved. I logged in to find an email saying they were taking no specific action, but the number had been deleted.

I was back in the UK about six months later. I went in branch, asked if they had a number stored for me, and yes, the teller read out my niece's number.

So I asked them to delete it, but they said the system doesn't allow this. They can call head office....

So, I walked out, bought a phone for twelve pounds in tesco and a sim for 99p in smiths (tesco was out of sims). I warned my niece she would get one last text. I changed the number to mine once and for all, confirmed the code. Threw the sim away (as I hate mobiles; don't want to be reachable 24/7), though actually I really like the phone as I use it to play podcasts.

I got a letter from them saying I could complain to the ombudsman, but what for? The thing is, the one time I accidentally tried to make a bacs payment with insufficient funds (put the wrong account in on an online form), they were very quick to charge me thirty five quid. Yet they can mess me about like this and it costs them nothing.
