Alternatives to tiled splashbacks

Options
I have just bought a freestanding beech wood kitchen (canella from habitat) and was hoping to have stainless steel splashbacks as tiles would look a bit odd with freestanding units I think. Trouble is I can only find set sizes to go behind ovens and I want a long strip to sit behind a worktop. Am worried a made to measure will be really expensive - any good suggestions either for the stainless steel or alternative solutions?
Thanks in advance, Jo

I used copper for bath panels once. I just phoned around everyone in the yellow pages that related to metal and eventually found a company that did industrial type 'stuff' with sheet copper :o and they agreed to sell me some and even cut it to size for me.

Don't use copper for a bath panel, by the way. It's impossible to clean and I couldn't bring myself to do the yoghurt thing.

Instead of those little kitchen tiles, you could use larger floor type tiles, maybe slate? and tile the entire wall up to the height you want so there are no breaks in it at all. Lose the skirting from the room, tile right down to the floor and I think it would look really smart.
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
  • A plain coloured/tinted glass may be cheaper - try a stain glass specialist in your area. Easy to clean and looks pretty good!

Look at number 4, picture number 2 - something like that?!

B&Q sell a stainless steel splashback, it is a thin metal sheet bonded to mdf and can be cut to whatever height exists between your base and wall cabinets.
I think it comes in lengths of something over 2 metres, it is not a generally stocked item but certainly was in the Kitchen catalogue.

Google "laminate splashbacks" - lots to choose from !
  • Made to measure will not be expensive. Just take your measurements to a stainless stockist and get a price. There is someone on ebay that sells stainless shteet cut to size. Then just bond it to the wall with grab adhesive.
