I am looking into hen houses i could do with something portable but not too expensive i have seen some lovely solid looking ones but they are about £300 just for the house. I could make the pen myself but not the hen house

any ideas for a suitable one?

We made sure we had photocopy of the deeds as its always handy to have them

Indeed they would be. So would my mortgage provider have these then?

Well I don't know about being portable (it doesn't have handles or anything) but I've just bought and built this one:

So far I'm happy with it (although I'm yet to put chickens in it!:rotfl:)

    Hi
i just checked the land reg papers all i can find is that 'nor shall any act or thing be done or permitted to be done nor any animals articles or things to be brought or permitted to be brought or kept or placed upon the propertyor any parts thereof which might be or become a nuisance or annoyance to the adjoining property or to the neighbourhood'

so im not sure if that means no chickens???!!

I would think or hope that it would mean that a few quiet chickens would be ok?
Hi, I didn't check deeds, ask council or anything. I told my neighbours after I got the chickens last week and they all thought it was cool and asked for spare eggs. haha. I read on omelet.co.uk that you don't need permission from the council so I immediately went and got some chickens.

Edmund: I ordered the same coop as you, thanks! I came across your post while researching like mad for a coop that will fit down the side of my house and also not be made of match wood. Its coming tomorrow. I will be glad to free up the cat run. ;-)

  • At the risk of sounding dim, how do I go about checking what is on my title deeds, as i thought you only received them once the mortgage is paid off in full (a very distant dream, I'm afraid!)?

I was just thinking that it would be perhaps a good idea to check there are no restrictions against keeping chickens ...

I am not a lawyer (except in the barrack room) but nowadays things appear to have changed a tad with records being kept electronically on the Land Registry. I presume that "hard copy" of deeds are available as O.H. was given hers when her mortgage sadly passed away after a long illness a couple of years ago. :rotfl:

You could be in for a bit of a surprise though if you ask your mortgage provider for a copy. I have just read a couple of leaflets re charges and the greedy beggars have cottoned on to a revenue raiser, "Title Deeds - Photocopies £25". You may well be with a benevolent lender who does not impose a charge for sight of deeds but the administration involved in digging them out and then arranging for you to view them when their employee could be more usefully employed selling payment protection insurance could cause financial meltdown.

Anyway, good luck, prepare for the worst and you may be pleasantly surprised.

Batcatz, are you sure the 0mlet site isn't referring to planning permission for a hen run/coop as opposed to permission regarding the keeping of livestock on property? I've never had any problems before with keeping livestock but both sisters and many of my friends have privately owned houses with clauses in the title deeds forbidding keeping poultry or breeding rabbits - I found that one funny! :D Council tenants definitely need to get permission to keep pets or livestock, a friend in a flat had to await permission to get a cat. I guess it's just all administrative stuff so they know who has what and what, if any, damage could be caused or vermin attracted. We made sure we could keep hens before signing our tenancy agreement, but the house next door, exact same as ours, exact same landlord, on the same farm, has a clause in their lease saying no poultry or pigs.

Hi Any Chance - The one I got had the following title: 'CHICKEN COOP HEN HOUSE POULTRY ARK HOME NEST RUN COUP 4'. Try searching Ebay for the description.

For info the the seller 'gardensandpets-uk' sells that particular run as a 'Buy it Now' sale (at £139.99) and also as a genuine auction (where you can place bids). Its worthwhile going for the actual auction because (as long as you don't bid above 139.99) you have the opportunity to get it a little cheaper. i did the auction and got it for £130.00 so I saved £10 but I know some of his other auctions for the same henhouse have gone for as little as £99.00 - worth knowing! Good luck!

Thanks eddie. It looks like you can get the title deeds from the official landregistry website (the one with the .gov in it) for about £4 each. I may go through all my paperwork first before I do that ... but it's good to know that it's cheaply and easily available.

Fred died last night / this morning :( All curled up in the nest box like she was asleep.

So now Sheila's all alone! I'm trying to rehome her locally.
