Today is poultry sale day and I should have been going but can't! Hmph! I was hoping to take a dew of my extra chickens for selling but it would have meant an overnight at relatives, as the sale is over miles away from us. Never mind, friend is there checking out prices. I'll be gutted if they make enormous amounts of money and mine are still all out in the garden eating and growing into crowing cockerels.
so cute arnt they, 1x sultan, 2x white star and 2x light sussex, i wuv my chickidees, these ones ar purebreds but the ones you have seen on the garden are mixed. any ideas on sexing these breeds as we deff only want one cockadoodlie at 5 am

My chicken is bullying my cat
Well he always has been a softy. But today I saw him wandering the garden looking traumatised, went outside and heard a metallic "peck-peck-peck". Sheila had broken into Tufter's shed, jumped up to the food shelf and was munching down on his Tuna and Cod Whiskas! ive come across a problem and im so worried for my little chicks, im hoping one of you kind people could advise me pretty quickly what to do as im in a bit of a panic now. 2 of my chickies have poopie bum which ive washed and cleaned off, when i did the first one there was like a little lump(which looked like poo) further down, it was stuck so i washed and got it off, underneath was a little hole. i thought this was his bumhole?...... apparently not and they only have a vent.... now what? my other poopie bum has got a hard bit lowere down too
do they have like a belly button or something? daft question i know but it must be something?

I'm haveing troble understanding what exactly you mean and not sure I could help anyway, could you phone the people you bought them from? Are you saying they have two holes? When you bought them did you check them over to see if the yolk had been absorbed?
I do have some pics from last year of my mongrel chickens that I found today if anyone wants to see.

Great pics, Katharine, isn't it amazing how much the colour changes as chicks grow? Must get a photo of my 3 amigos who were all hatched fluffy yellow, like they were going to be white.
Feefee, did you managed to get to the bottom of the problem (pardon the pun)?
Today, 'Yellow Legs' is going to his new home, so that just leaves Ned, Captain Beaky and Flash Harry to rehome. Then, of course, there's the next lot of chicks growing fast, and it looks like there could be at least 2 cockerels in that lot. Mr White is still with us, not sure what I am going to do with him if the neighbour doesn't want him back.
Getting half a dozen eggs per day at the moment, so I'm just waiting for DS to leave for work then I'm going to make another batch of lemon curd. I guess it'll be meringues from the whites, unless anyone can think of anything else to make from them?I reserve the right not to spend.

They may have changed a bit but I can still recognise who is who as chicks, weird seeing a mini-Lyall (the one that looks like a light sussex) he has grown more impressive this year. Looks like I have two blues, a black, and a splash, I'm tentatively hopeing I have only one Maran cockrel, the black one is certainly a he. The others are all different but he is the most obviously different so here's hopeing I only have a Dorking Cockrel to spare. I've decided to call the french marans french themed names so blacky will be Rene, and the hopefully girls will be Yvette, Michelle and Mimi. I might have to call my Dorking boy Gene after Hunt!0

Well I am feeling very mean as I have decided to take action on my broody hi-line. She has been broody for ages now and I have tried all sorts of action. As I am due to go on holiday and will be getting a neighbour to feed them, I need her to be out of the nesting box as the neighbour doesn't like lifting the hens and I can't guarantee she will eat if she isn't moved physically near the food a couple of times a day.
Yesterday, I decided to create a wire broody cage which I have position in the pen. She spent last night in it, much to her disgust and is create a hell of a noise whenever I am within view.
I will let you know how it goes. Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!
