Quick update Marj the broody has been moved back outside, I have now finished the makeshift run which will have a roof tomorrow....Darn magpies!
Removed her from the eggs and she enjoyed 10 minutes in the warm soil dust bath.... she really didnt want to go back in as she was really loving the soil flapping in her wings but while she was out my daughter and I candled the eggs, prepared with torch and under the bed where it was dark, it appears Marj re accepted the cold egg, but unfortunately it is a duff as was clear again, so I have disposed of it, I can see spider veins yippppie, was so excited and also 3 of the eggs had a small black spot that moved.... Double Yipppie!!!,
Sadly I believe that one has the red ring of death or whatever you call it, but I have placed it back in the clutch just incase upon next inspection it proves me wrong, if I'm sure I will dispose also.
It has now been exactly a week that she has been sitting, 2 weeks to go am more than excited!!!!
Sorry to hear of the ex bat, but I'm sure she went to chicken heaven a happy Bird, dreaming of all the dust bathing she did whilst she was enjoying her time with you.Thriftkitten

I'm on page 51 of this thread but I just wanted to say that I still AM Nyk
I don't have chickens yet but I think I will by the time I get to this post...
Nope, I got to the end and I don't have chickens yet. They'll be ready to leave their Mum on August 22nd. My Omlet netting fence has arrived and I've ordered this coop and a double run: http://www.chickencoopsandhouses.co.uk/cc1250W.html (sorry, I can't seem to do the link in a word tonight), plus I've started looking into the best place to buy food.ionahenor2 wrote: »Just got the sad news that Raw Green Cottages of Barnsley is closing down.
Jody is selling all her hens and equipment .
Her website is still up and nothing on there says anything about closing down - I've saved it as a favourite as it's not too far from me. Should I delete it?
My chickens will be Light Sussex when they arrive. Well, to be fair, they're already Light Sussex but they're not my chickens yet0 -
I've started looking into the best place to buy food.

I don't know what prices are like in your area but I've just had a delivery from Dodson & Horrell - 5 x 20kg sacks of layers pellets for £44.50. £8.90 per 20kg sack with free delivery for orders over £40If you lend someone £20 and never see them again, it was probably £20 well spent...0

Nykied Jody from Raw Green sent out emails about closing down but you could ring to double check.
If you are near her there is Storrs Poultry http://www.storrspoultry.co.uk/prices.php
Hinchliffes in Huddersfield http://www.hinchliffes.com/breeds.php.
They also sell feed. I paid £7.50 a bag before Christmas.0 -
Another plastic chicken house.

Thanks people. The feed place that's two miles from where I live (it's in Wetherby) has 20kg bags of layers pellets for £7.80 and growers pellets for £9.80. They don't have a website. The other place, which is about half an hour from me, in Thirsk, is http://www.greenscountrystore.co.uk/poultry-supplies has layers pellets for £7.50 and growers pellets for £9.00.0

Blimey, I think Petal must have enjoyed being a mum as she's gone all broody again! As tempting as it is to let her hatch some more, I think that we have enough chicks for this year (especially as most of them seem to be boys!)
We're still playing musical coops here with the chicks and Ducky. The last couple of nights, Petal's two have been coopsharing with my three.
Ducky tried sharing with the new marans on Saturday night, but was back in the main coop last night. The marans seemed a bit confused when Ducky joined them, but as they're the newbies, they were ok with it, although I'm sure I heard them telling Ducky to shut up and go to sleep as s/he was rabbiting on!
And we still have to get Mirabelle's two off the top of the swing bench and pop them in the back of the main coop because every time they try to go in, they get pecked by whoever is standing guard at the door! <rolls eyes> They make such a racket when we try to get them, but once we're holding them, they're as calm as anything.
Oh, forgot to say, Heather, so sorry to hear about your girl. But, as others have said, she had a lovely life after her incarceration that she would never have known if you hadn't taken her. I'm sure she loved her new life with you. x

Oh, I had bad news today! My chicks have been eaten by a fox or a cat - before I've even got them! I now need to find some more or wait for more to hatch from the same hen. My coop arrives on Thursday, what do I do? I want small chickens, not the massive ones I've seen - the ones I was getting were Light Sussex.0
-
Oh no, poor chicks.
If you want small chickens, bantams are your best bet. Light sussex aren't particularly small. If you've seen any of our videos, the white chicken (Miss Amelia) is a sussex, to give you an idea of size. Our lavender araucana is a bantam, as are the pekins. The only thing is, bantams lay small eggs, about half the size of a normal egg.0
