Hey.... Lets keep Chickens..!

Dear HeatherintheHills,
Thank you very much for sharing your practice/experience.
Grately appreciated.
No, they tend to keep chickens in the coop all day. They let them free in the garden on a sunny day but I must say it is very very rare. The recent wet weather may be behind it, though.
I am not sure whether their coop is movable. It is relatively a huge built and they (i.e. the neighbour) built it themselves. So it might be a permanent one. But I will ask them about it when I approach them on this.
Best regards,

i have 2 plastic hen houses attached (the other is standing inside) the walk in run. This is near the house so i can see them from my kitchen window.
Every morning i get the hose and clean the roosting area and empty the poo trays. Where I have a bench in the run for them to sit on I sprinkle Stalosan (disinfectant) after I have poo picked.
the run flooring is Hemcore which i find absorbs poo and is really easy then to pick it with some tongs.
Oh and i have a fly trap thing hanging up near the run - now that does pong a bit, but is effective in keeping down any flies.Mortgage free as of 10/02/2015. Every brick and blade of grass belongs to meeeee. :j0 -
Dear Spirit,
Thank you for your reply. Another problem I have with the neighbour's chickens is flies! They are massive and I alway have a couple of flies in the dining room when the patio door which leads to our garden is open. It is great to know that there is a product which help reducing the number of flies. I will suggest that to our neighbour.
After hearing from you, it seems like our neighbour's 'cleaning' practice is quite relaxed!
Best,

My lovely little sablepoot cockerel lost the battle against his eye infection last night. Had to take him to the vets to be pts. I'm completely gutted. Lemon was so many kinds of awesome that i'm really going to miss him.
If i left the car window open, he'd fly in and perch on the seat back. He'd come out for a ride to town, banking over on his perch as we went round corners.
He used to chat a lot too. A style of vocalising that we called " tooting and parping " most often in evidence when you were eating and he wanted a treat !
Whenever the kitchen door was left open, he'd be the first one in, looking for me and if i was siiting down he'd fly up and perch on me for a snooze. Or if it was winter, he'd settle down infront of the fire, stick his head under his wing and it was goodnight vienna lol
This is my favourite picture of Lemon even though i wasn't aiming for him. I was taking pics of the thing behind him for a felting project but as soon as i snapped, he was up on the table giving it his best side0 -
So sorry for your loss, he sounds like he was great fun and he was a handsome fella. Sweet dreams Lemon. x0

hugs for you.Mortgage free as of 10/02/2015. Every brick and blade of grass belongs to meeeee. :j0 -
My poor chickens had a tough week last week with all the wind and rain and no house. We were catching the hens at night and putting them in a cardboard box in the garage. We finally got our chicken coop, the man we bought it off gave us a nice discount too. Not too sure what I think of it so far.
Oh by the way, whatever the vet sprayed on my chickens backsides seems to have worked – no lice.:j:j
We went to our first poultry fair just over a week ago – how would you know who is reputable and who isn’t. A lot of people were taking chickens and ducks away in large brown paper potato sacks. Is this the way it is done?
Last night I had a little visitor in the kitchen, who left me a little present on the floor. A few minutes after shooing her out, I had two little visitors and another present. I would like to say that the present was an egg, but not yet.
Giger – I love your ducks. I am so jealous.
Spirit – Your new auracanas are lovely.
Syman - Have you decided what hens you will get?
daisy_darling – Sorry to hear about Lemon RIP. He was a real looker + he knew how to pose alright. Was he a show bird?
Pakkun -I am so sorry for the problems you are having with your neighbours, I hope things get sorted out for you.
Sorry about the lack of thanks, my computer is playing up and is removing my thanks from posts. I have know idea how or why. 0
