The hen house is obviously not fit for purpose. How many chickens do you have? If you have any cat travelling boxes, or know anybody who would let you borrow some, you could let the hens sleep in those in your shed until you've had time to get a decent coop.

Thanks moneymission, will look at that one again. I have looked at so many I have just confused myself.

What do you think of this one?

I have problems figuring out if the coops will do 4 large hens. Some say 4 hens but mean 4 bantums and 2 large hens

  • Happymum, are you anywhere near a B&Q? If so, a lot of people use THIS More than big enough for 4 large girls. Keep them well ventilated to avoid condensation and it should keep your girls warm and dry.

It is quite easy to adapt, and you could buy/make a run to go with it.
And I'd be asking that guy for a refund. A wet chicken house is not acceptable.

Happymum. That one you posted a link to looks very snazzy. I would have given it serious consideration had I found it online! However, I did want a coop with legs on so that it will deter rodents from nesting underneath. Obviously this isn't an issue if you move the house frequently. Its also more expensive (£70.00 more) than the Solway.

Its all personal preference though and its a minefield of information!!

Hope you find something you like.

  • If anyone is interested in a plastic coop, I have made a list of websites in my frantic search. Our henhouse is being taken away tomorrow am.

Good list Happymum. You never know we might be on it at sometime:rotfl:

I think I like the Carefree best but don't know if the perches are wood or plastic. Omlet had problems when they first brought out the eglu as that had wooden rungs inside. I have an eglu with the plastic perches which are good but eglus are expensive. You can pick them up on ebay quite often.

Just read they have wooden perches.

Just wanted to say hello! I love this thread and am so excited to be able to post about my chickens on here finally! :D

Today (after years of wanting chickens) we finally got our 4 girls who are 18 weeks old:

Henrietta - A Staffordshire Calder Ranger
Scramble - A Staffordshire Amber Link
Megg - A Staffordshire Road Rock
Georgie - A Staffordshire Blue Ranger

They are lovely friendly girls and seem to be settling in well, only a minor hiccup when we attempted to 'put them to bed' at 8.30pm but they were having none of it, however we tried again at 9.30pm and they were ready for bed and went straight in :rotfl:

Looking forward to getting into a routine with them and looking forward to getting our first eggs :T

    Lovely girls Annaeliz.

Isn't it funny how different breeders give the breeds different names. Megg looks like my little Black Rock. She has a lovely temperament and was an excellent layer. Mine don't go to bed until after nine and sometimes when I go to shut them up they come out. They remind me of a cuckoo clock. I'm sure you will enjoy having them, they are such characters.
  • What beautiful girls Annaeliz :)

My bantam is sitting on 4 eggs. I'm trying not to get too excited, it is the first time for us both. :D
