So any way, our chick...he was ok Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, standing up a bit better and being looked after by Phantom, then I went to work Wednesday and when I got home, I went out to see him and he'd gone - just gone, no blood and feathers, nothing.

I searched the garden for three hours but didn't find him. I can't imagine if they killed and cannibalised him that there wouldn't be a scrap or a mark of anything to show for it, so we're having to assume he got out somehow.

I'm very sad about it, it was hard giving up the search. Neither of the other two eggs have hatched, so I think that's it for our brief foray in to chicken breeding.

    Thanks xxx

I threw the other two eggs away today, I gave them a tentative shake and they both sloshed so there's nothing happening there. I have to say, I have 8 Edith eggs in the fridge....I really want to go and stick some under Ethel, I just want fluffy babies now, but she's been sitting for three weeks, she needs a break not another three weeks on the nest.

Sorry to say that Stoogy got taken off by a fox this morning. I got her up at 8.00am , went out back at 10.00am - no one in the garden. I followed a trail and found a massive pile of feathers in next door's garden which i have access to.In 3 years never had one attack even at night -so I thought that i was immune. Being by herself wouldn't have helped although if there would have been other chickens in the garden they might have helped in giving an alarm call but probably would not have saved her.
    Farewell little one.

Update . Well ive found the body stuffed in a little gully next to the pile of feathers. the neck is bald and almost certaninly broken- but i am having my doubts as to whether it was a cat and not a fox as nothing on the body suggests that it has been munched. If it was a cat then it is another reason for chicken owners not to keep a lone chicken. I think i will leave the body where it is and if a fox does want it then there is a meal waiting for it.

Sorry to hear about Stoogy ljonski. Will you get more ladies?

Welcome Not So Old. Any eggs yet?

    Hows the clucking cleavage Giger?

We have some squatters too, Symon but not sure of the make or how many there are as they are too high up to see in the nest. Just heard lots of cheeping.

How is Hopalong Shortie? Hope her foot is healing. She would do well with my Digger (captain one eye). She is much better but is still being picked on by lettie the little madam.

Well, he and the other two are now sharing new spacious accomodation! We bought an indoor guinea pig cage yesterday for them, as the box they were in was getting too small and they've started to test out their wings. But he loves to come out and sit with us, perched on our shoulders, occasionally pecking our faces and chattering away!

He fluttered up onto hubby's head the other night and left a deposit! :rotfl:
