Well its hatching weekend here in the Fru House!
3 little quail eggs leftNot many so haven't got high hopes really... The rest (about 9) seem to be in good shape and should hatch end of next week...
The 3 have been moved to the hatcher which is kept very humid and at 99f...
I am looking at them every 20 mins or so in the hope I might see some pipping but nothing to report so far
Today is Day 15 so would expect to see something happening within 48 hours... thats a lot of 20 minute watching :rotfl:
Got to go to bed... Bet it all happens when I am asleep!
When I set the second batch, I set them in 3 batches, 3 hours apart so that we won't miss any of the action!
I will post pics if/when we see any movement/chicks!!! :j0 -
Does anyone know what i can do about someone having a rooster in an allotment over the road from me?
Every morning at 4.30am it wakes me up and doesnt shut up till about 8. The council said its not a council allotment so they cant do anything, who else can i complain to?
p.s. im not in the country and its annoying, i think the allotment owner doesnt live nearby so he doesnt have to deal with it0 -
environmental health -doesn't matter if it is council property itself. Also check with council that keeping roosters is against the council byelaws"if the state cannot find within itself a place for those who peacefully refuse to worship at its temples, then it’s the state that’s become extreme".Revd Dr Giles Fraser on Radio 4 20170

I have read this thread with great interest. We have chickens in the school where my daughter goes. From what i have seen and been told they are relatively easy to keep. So, as my daughter leaves for high school in the summer i was toying with the idea of getting a couple at home.
I have looked around so many sites for advice (it is one of my faults i think, over doing the research and scaring the pants off my self with all the details LOL).
Could someone give me a rough ball park idea of how much i would need to get two chickens, and the necessary bits to start. Then again a ball park figure of ongoing monthly costs. Possibly say compared to owning a small to medium dog.
We a not on a big wage as a household so i need to be sure we can afford to keep them in the best possible health.

My forend made me laugh today when she came to see us. She asked if we put sun tan cream on our chucks? As they are battery hens and I went well erm no they wear tee shirts as the weather is getting better! She looked at me as if I was mad. But when I explained what they were and we got them from a battery farm. She kinda of understood.Has anyone seen my last marble:A:A:A:A

The joy of keeping chickens far exceeds any expense they occur. 2 chooks could quite happily live in a cupboard in teh garden with shredded newspaper to nest. Check locally how much Chicken feed is also there is medicine and safety to consider. Be prepared for a lot of work and you need discipline to do all the chores..you will never break even in costs but you just might get addicted.
