I picked up a hint from another chook forum which others here might find useful... To prevent red spider mite getting at your birds at night, smear vaseline at the end of the perches! They can't travel past it ;)

Thanks for the replies, lino and no pineapple it is, lol. They'll be hard pushed to get cornflakes and rice crispies out of my cupboard though, I'm a meanie and my biys get weetabix and porridge, lol. The occasions I get the kids cereals as a treat for them, they don't last long hehe

Mine love oats both cooked and raw, in fact the wild birds and squirrels are fond of oats too. I take a pot of oats with me when I go up the drive for the post and I'm sure the tweet goes round that I'm on my way. Today the pheasant was waiting by one of the feeding spots. :rotfl:

When you say cooked - you mean with the same 'stick to your ribs stodge-factor' as humans eat? Is it made with water only and not milk?

When I give my girls porridge, I just add warm water to the oats and give it a mix.

I'm getting some new rescue chooks next week :D

Moved the 4 original girls to a new and larger house with run in a larger pen on the allotment this week and am busy steam cleaning the smaller house ready for the 2 or 3 new girls :D
My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead :D

My OH makes the porridge for breakfast with milk and he usually gives the girls a share of that. By the time it's cooled it is a bit solid so I just add a little water to it. If it's too runny it gets flicked onto all and if it it is too thick it gets stuck to their beaks and then they wipe it on my arm or leg if I'm crouched down. I can't win but they do make me laugh.
