We bought them as babies assured that they will start laying soon but since June we've had nothing. We were beginning to think that they were going to be pets rather than involved family members that contributed to the household.
...Of course now they'll probably stop laying as it's winter. Our old hens laid all the time no matter what, but I've read that they sometimes stop in the cold and start again as the nights get shorter. Have to wait and see, but for now....Go chickens go!
Brilliant news!!
After 8 months with only the occasional egg we found 5 yesterday
. I am wondering if the new chooks are laying and if the sunshine is helping the othersI know it is making ne feel better.

We have another today and we know who laid it. It was Phantom the Bantam, my sons little black hen (great name isn't it? 8 year olds creativity). She was still sitting on it when I went to let them out this morning.
Well done Phantom!!"There is no substitute for time."

I don't know if this has been discussed before but I couldn't find it:o
I've got 6 ex batts (since May this year) and they are brilliant, good layers, happy, settled etc etc but as we are approaching the firework time of year I'm wondering how they will cope with the barrage and what I neeed to do (if anything) to help them? They have a large coop, which is locked once they have 'gone to bed' and I have a light which I could leave on for them but I don't know whether they would be better in the dark? Please advise if you can. Thank you!0 -
Our previous chickens slept like they were dead, nothing woke them up, you could pick them up and put them down asleep. We went out at fireworks time and they were all settled with no squawking so we let them be."There is no substitute for time."
